Rugged peaks greet the voyager in the north. Magnificently they reach to
the sky, one as round, one as tor, one hidden in the birch forest. Each one has
their own figure and character. You can differ them by names if not any other
way. The names give them their individual echo. Each name has its own meaning,
story, or origin, according to how they earned their names. And many fells even
now bear their old Sámi name or at least echoing former Forest Sámi language to
a voyager.
The word ‘fell’ was in Kemi Sámi tuodâr or tuoddâr, ‘round
peak’ was called saLK oaivi or uäivi, saIK uäivi or uäive.
Tunturi

Jylhät
tunturinpäät tervehtivät kulkijaa pohjoisessa. Näyttävinä ne kokoavat kohti
taivasta, kuka pyöreänä kalliopäänä, kuka kivirakan täyttämänä röykkiönä, kuka
koivikkoon verhottuna. Kohta jokaisella tunturilla on oma tunnistettava
luonteensa ja ulkomuotonsa. Viimeistään nimet erottavat laet tarkemmin
toisistaan ja antavat niille omaleimaisen kaikunsa – ja jokaisella nimellä on
oma merkitys, tarina tai alkuperä, mistä kukin tunturi on nimensä ansainnut. Ja
moni tunturi kantaa yhä vanhaa saamenkielistä nimeään tai sen harmaantunutta hahmoa,
muistellen kulkijalle metsäsaamelaisten entistä kieltä.

‘tunturi’ oli keminsaameksi tuodâr tai tuoddâr, ‘pyöreä
tunturinlaki’ taas saLK oaivi tai uäivi, saIK uäivi tai uäive.
