RugRescue -tutorial

You know I took off my rag rugs from the loom. This is how I finished the edges by knots. But this is a good way to know because by this method you can make your rugs live longer. They often get frayed at both ends and I want to show you how to rescue them.

Here I unravel the extra weft that needs to be woven at each begin and end of every woven project. It secures and protects the project edges. If your rug has frayed you unravel as much weft as needed to remove the frayed part and to be able to make the knots from the warp threads.

You can take it all off at one time or little by little. If it is your first time or you are not sure will you be interrupted I do recommend you dong it little by little.

You need to secure the place and time to be able to do it. If you are a beginner one hour should be enough.

At first you need to make the knots to secure each warp thread. At the end it really doesn't matter which kind of knots you make. The point is to make the ones you can be sure about.

When you have done it all re-arrange the warp end threads back to the normal.

Then collect together certain amount of threads. Here I use six warp threads. Twine them up around your finger...

...and pull the end through. Gently tighten and secure the knot by moving it up next to the weft line.

This is just a sample of easiest knots. If you are more skill full or interested only your own imagination creates the limits of it how decorative knots you can make.

By using the table edge it is easier to measure and cut the warp end threads to be even.

When they all are exact the result will be tidy and perfect. It really gives the rug new look. If only your thread ends are frayed you can cut just them a little bit.

If you have some loose weft problems with the side edges you don't need to unravel it all.

Just get a small hook and pull it all through up and down according to the rhythm the weft has.

In this way you can hide things into the rug. they will turn out quite invisible.

Oh!

Oh, just look what I found for sale at MyLocalLibrary with just 1€! I could not leave it there! It is Finnish but originally German Lehrbuch der Handarbeiten! Published in Finnish on 1961.

It has it all! Well, not all all but it all we have mostly abandoned and forgotten!!!! I really need to pay more attention on it. What a treasure!

AAW Mittens No3

I have knit one more pair my own design mittens. These are exactly similar to AAW Mittens No1 and AAW Mittens No2 but they all differ from each other by the decorative style.

Because it is AAW yarn it has angora effect. It is like mohair. Usually I don't brush / groom the finished products but let the effect pop out during the time. This time I brushed out the mittens to get the angora effect out. The fluffy effect makes the mittens to be even more warmer. These will be a Christmas gift for a person who outdoors a lot in arctic so already starting from the 1st time they'll be warmer than the other mittens I've knit. You can see the difference quite clear on the pic. For grooming I use normal nail brush. I used it also with Babouska LegWarmers. Nail brush does just fine and is much cheaper than specially designed mohair brushes which really seem to be just re-named nail brushes!

Scarecrow -tutorial

Every year we who love, can and need to grow something in our gardens face the annual problem: "How to keep your crop yourself?!" There are so many other hungry creatures on the planet earth who would like to eat it. It is never-ending fight about your rights on your own cultivation!

In MyGarden I have solved this problem out quite permanent now I think. The biggest fight I go by the strawberries. The net to hide the strawberries itself doesn't solve the problem. Greedy birds try to go through it. This summer I had to kill three -by my own hands- who had get caught to it! That's why I made more special arrangements. I want all the birds to stay a bit further.

Other fight I have by my two saskatoons. They can not be so common around here because the birds seem to think when they are red (=RAW!!!) they are perfect. When they turn out almost to black they are matured but after fading delicious red the birds loose their interest towards my saskatoons. The problem is to secure the raw berries.

My saskatons are very small despite I've had them for 8 years now! They arrived very tiny from a gardener shop mail outlet sale. They are Canadian related and should be able to grow here. But the local climate in MyGarden is so cold that neither my SIBERIAN blackberries have been successful. They are alive but not growing and producing like they should EVEN they grow on the warmest place! So my saskatoons have not been producing much. Only last year I started to get something so I covered them by a net. Taking the net down turn out a bit difficult so now I used old VHS tape like I did with my apple trees.

TheBirds don't mind MyAppleTrees BUT they use their branches as resting place. Last Autumn I saw incredible happening when a house sparrow landed on a branch and the branch BROKE OFF! You can image how confused the sparrow was about the accident. I asked about Her if She had eaten too many berries of mine. She was dumbfounded and could not do anything but shake Her head and finally fly away! So, that's why I have decided to put scarecrows also on MyAppleTrees when they have apples on! They obviously can not stand any more extra weight. (We also support the branches.)

I do have 4 apple and 1 crabapple trees in my garden. On the video below you see a real apple tree  of mine but notice how small it is up here in the north. The crabapple tree "Rescue" I plant just few days ago. My apple trees are Pirja, Cinnamon Spice, Bright White and Borgovskoje.

Making Scarecrow has never been this easy! And they do work. See the video to notice how I hang them both. The birds fear the blinks these scarecrows cause. Also the sound of VHS tapes in the wind fears them. Never leave your Scarecrows in the garden over the year. Put them on only when needed and take immediately away when you harvest so that the birds can not get used to them and loose their fear.

I never take all the crop to MySelf. I share a bit with friends but also leave something on. It is a traditional habit. You need to leave something for the spirits too so that they take care of your garden. If you don't believe in the spirits and sprites just leave something for the birds and hedgehogs. They come to eat the rest and at the same time eat the bugs too which could destroy your crop next year. By using this old method I have never needed chemicals for bugs or anything in MyGarden. At the end they all -we all- belong together and should leave in peace.

Off the Loom

I have now finished the weaving of the other rag rug I decided to make. It is more grey than green. I used rags also to create this rug.

At the end it all is hidden in the loom so the result comes out to us all only when taking it all off.

I just cut off the warp and made temporary knots to secure the weaving. Later on I will make the proper ends for the rugs.

I also needed to separate these two rugs from each others. You just need to cut it all with scissors. Of course it is a bit frightening but it is a job which just needs to be done.

Now it all is rolled up and placed on the top of MyLoom. I've had few discussions with TheCat are these Hers or M I N E. She seems to be a bit disturbed I took them off and She lost Her brand new resting place.

AAW Mittens No2

I have knit another pair of AAW Mittens. AAW Mittens No1 are similar Lappish style but a bit more decorative. Both are my own design but as you can see there is nothing extraordinary in them and my design with them base on the traditional style.

These are small size and the count bases on the method 10 per needle (4 needles), 1 round, stripe, 10 rounds, stripe, 20 rounds, space for the thumb, 20 rounds and starting the end bit. Thumb is for 8+1 and 8+1 on both needles, 15 rounds and then start of the end bit. To get the right dimensions for your socks and mittens is a lot up to maths. I makes it all symmetric and usually fits on better in that way. We don't think about it but the nature is full of mathematical symmetry.

I used both shades of our own arctic angora wool AAW. After finishing this pair I started new similar. See, Santa Claus Factory is working on hard at this time of the year. All the gifts he shares can not be made in one polar night.

LastNight

LastNight YoungLady called me to see the sky. The winds of changes are blowing again like they did on last August. This time the sky seemed to be on fire like someone had plaid a bit with it! It really has started to create us the coming autumn. Officially it still is fortnight left of the summer but you can feel the wind has arrived to change it all.

LuostoClassic

I've been away but not far. I was in Luosto. If you want to travel to Finland and experience silence and nature in quiet and peace away from the most popular targets going to Luosto region on summer time is one good option. It is a ski resort on the wintertime but quite dead what comes to the summer. But they still are there. On the summer season the costs are low, tourists are away and silence is around.

I was there because of LuostoClassic. My DearFriendL invited me to experience the classic music festival in the nature. It is high level event with famous artists but still rural and isolated with small audience compared to other festivals. It is a great experience also to the artists. If you start to plan your trip notice that you need your outdoor clothes despite you'd be in a classic music concert. High heels and evening dresses can be left home. The music itself is the point; not showing your wardrobe around.

We stayed in a cosy log cabin. Staying was cheap compared to peak season prices in Finland. We paid just 56€ per night (breakfast, sheets and cleaning not included).

The cabin was by a lake and very close to the shore. We had our own terrace.

The shore was just few steps far away. It was possible to swim there and the depth of the water was not deep at all.

Also reindeers liked about the place. We saw them on early mornings lurking and hanging around when they thought we were still sleeping.

On the morning time the summit of Ukko-Luosto fell was hiding in the fog.

In Lapland there is not many events going on on the summer time. That makes it to be low budget season but also guarantees you personal peace. If you want just escape it all come to hide in Lapland on the summer season. There are many places for you to hide and experience the nature.

Kairankutsu is a professional guiding business on Luosto area. I participated on one of their route in LuostoClassic and I warmly can recommend their business. Everything is a bit expensive in Finland but by paying to Kairankutsu you will for sure feel it is worth of it. You are in good hands with them.

If you rent a car watch out reindeers. They belong to Lapland... or should I say Lapland belongs to them. They just hang around and may stuck up the traffic. Be patient with them, they are not the most intelligent creatures.

Bird No1

I have finished the 1st bird of TheBirdsCollection. I do have Framing tutorial No1 for you. It is how you usually do these things. But this time it turn out a bit disaster so I used another method. I was in the middle of the trouble so I forgot to take pics for you.

For the next bird's framing I will make proper pics for you to complete this alternative framing if you need a bit harder touch on it to get it done.

The result is "ok". The problem I faced was that the canvas was so hard that it didn't want to get fold to A N Y direction. And unfortunately I noticed immediately when started that the frame was a bit too big for the stitching!

YellowGardenSachet

I made YellowGardenSachet for another little birthday. It is filled with rose petals like in the tutorial. It is my own design but as you can see; very easy to make your own. I used -again- left over materials. The yellow ribbon is actually from  gift pack. I always save even the ribbons if they are still tidy and proper for card making or sewing.

TheLittleGiftBag is also recycled. I got it with SomeSoap I bought on the last October. You can see the paper bag on the background of the last pic on that blog post. 😊

Most rational stamp I have ever bought is this "Handmade" you see on the home made card. I make MyOwnCards for two resons and they both are good.

1.) You can get very personalized and unique cards by doing them by yourself.

2.) Cards can be relatively expensive around here. 5€ per card is an average  price for folded printed cards. Only Xmas cards you can find on sale like 5 for 1€. When you make your own cards by using imagination and recycled materials you can save a lot of money; not to mention the nature resources.

PS. When you view the web version and click "card making" label on the right you can see many more ideas for card making.

Birds

As I've told you before; I inherit a lot of yarn from my granny who passed away on 2010. There was also included few tapestry kits. Also these four birds I found among the yarns. This is how I faced them. She had started bits of them. They are old kits and no any kind of papers were included. Only the printed logo of the company (I assume) on each canvas. They had frames and yarns too but I am excited is there enough yarn for each. They are for about my hand size. This is how I found them; see the pics below.
