A dog has been a faithful companion of a human being
for thousands of years. It is the first domestic animal of Sámi also.
They used to go hunting squirrels, bears, and birds
with a dog. Previously, still at the end of 1800s, they used to go hunting
Finnish forest reindeers with a dog in autumn. Former deer hunter took a dog
with him into deer hunting and started to trace a Finnish forest deer with a
dog in a leash. The dog went first using its nose and when it finally stops, lift
its nose from the ground and wag its tail they knew a herd of deer was around.
Then deer hunter tied a leather ummus (uumâs) i.e muzzle around
the dog’s snout to prevent it barking at the game. After that they went on.
When the deer were in sight, they tied up the dog into a tree and deer hunters
went on towards the deer with their guns. You could hear the bangs of the guns and
afterwards they rewarded the dog in the share.
A good dog was the hunter’s best friend. A good dog
always found the prey if it was around in the woods and a good owner rewarded
the dog in the share. No hunter gave up a dog like that, not in any price.
In former Forest Sámi language, a dog was called peenâ,
pennâ or pennig, and a puppy was called vielpes.
Koira

Koira
on ollut ihmisen uskollinen kumppani vuosituhansien ajan. Se on myös
saamelaisten vanhin kotieläin.
Koiran
kanssa kuljettiin metsällä niin oravanpyynnissä, karhunajossa kuin
linnustuksessa, aiemmin – vielä 1800-luvun jälkipuoliskolla – myös
uurtokeinossa eli peuran syyspyynnissä. Entinen uurtomies otti tuolloin koiran
mukaansa peurametsälle ja lähti vetokoira hihnassa ottamaan vainua peurasta.
Koira veti kärjessä vainua ja kun se viimein pysähtyi, nosti kuononsa maasta ja
heilutti hännänkippuraansa, tiedettiin, että peuratokka oli lähellä. Silloin
uurtomies sitoi nahkaisen ummuksen (uumâs) eli kuonopussin
ajokoiran kuonoon, ettei koira haukahtaisi riistaa ja niin jälleen koira jatkoi
vetoa eteenpäin. Kun peurat tulivat näköpiiriin, koira sidottiin puuhun ja
uurtomiehet lähtivät aseineen kohti peuraeloa. Pitkät peurapyssyt paukahtelivat
ja kohta vetokoiraa muistettiin saaliinjaossa.
Hyvä
koira oli pyytömiehen paras toveri. Hyvä koira veti aina viljaan, saati sitä
vain metsässä oli – ja hyvä omistaja muisti vuorostaan koiraansa saaliin
saatuaan. Eikä metsästäjä luopunut sellaisesta hyvästä koirasta, ei niin
mistään hinnasta.
Metsäsaamelaisten
entisessä kielessä ‘koira’ oli peenâ, pennâ tai pennig,
‘koiranpentu’ taas vielpes.
