Peijaiset

Peijaiset is a Finnish word which has no literal translation to English. It is a traditional celebration that follows successful hunting season with the meaning to honor the game and make it return back to the hunting area via transmigration. In this fest hunters propitiate the game because of the death of its body so that it wants to transmigrate again into the woods.

Peijaiset are arranged for bears and moose once in a year nowadays. Before bear was worshiped and feared animal. It was king of the woods and that's why hunters arranged fest for it after every successful hunting.

This time our HuntingClub arranged peijaiset on 22nd of January. We used new catering service Satun Lounaskahvila (Satu's LunchCafe) and everyone was very pleased. Satu hunts herself too and she actually has shot the moose which trophy she ingeniously had placed to decorate the serving table. As you know I really appreciate this kind of artistic touch connected to the tradition! It was believed that the spirit of the animal lived in the skull and usually it was part of the fest food table and after the fest the skull was hanged up to be seen.

They had found even these beautiful matching moose printed paper serviettes. In Finland you can buy them at least at Eräkontti which is connected to Finland's national hunting association. But I am sure you can get them elsewhere too.
